Mr Kwek Leng Joo
Managing Director, City Developments Limited

Chairman of the Singapore Young Photographer Award (SYPA) Steering Committee, Mr Kwek initiated the Award in the hope of nurturing young artistic talents, while at the same time elevating the profile of photography art in Singapore. He sits on board the National Arts Council and is honorary chairman and patron to a few major photo clubs including the Photographic Society of Singapore and NYAA Young Photographers Network.

An avid photographer whose love for photography was ignited when he was only 10, Mr Kwek has over time established a versatile style. His portfolio covers diverse subjects such as nature, architecture/buildings, street scenes and people. He has published two photo art books – Heart Voyage 1 & 2 – and held several solo and group exhibitions. His philosophy in photography is to appreciate the lessons and experience learned with each photo taken and to continually explore new possibilities photography offers.

 

Mr Chow Chee Yong
Lecturer, Temasek Polytechnic

Mr Chow graduated with a BFA (Honours) degree in Photography in 1994 from Western Michigan University, USA. In 1998, he received the JCCI Art Scholarship, which brought him to Tokyo for his graduate studies. He received his MA (Distinction) degree in Photography in 2001 from Musashino Art University, Tokyo, Japan.

He has participated in more than 30 solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. His works have been featured in publications such as Passages North (USA), OP Editions (Hong Kong), Photo Asia (Singapore) and Photographs by the Next Generation: Young Portfolio (Japan), among others. His first publication ‘30th Feb’ - a collection of his surrealistic Images - was launched in Singapore in February 2008. His original prints can be found in various corporate, private and museum collections in Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States.

 

Mr Lee Tiah Kee

Mr Lee started his photographic journey during his teenage years and has close to 20 years of experience. At work, Mr Lee is constantly challenged by the demands of photojournalism, while at leisure he is fascinated with bird photography.

His works have earned him accolades including a FIAP Silver Medal in the 54th Singapore International Photography Award 2007 (Digital Nature Section), first prize in the Merlion Park International Photo Competition 2002, Overall Best Award in the Discovering Singapore and The World Photography Competition 1995 and the Young Artist Award in Photographer in 1992. Mr Lee has been on the SYPA Judging Panel since 2006, contributing invaluable mentorship to budding photographers at photo workshops.

 

Mr Sebastian Tan
Group Managing Director, Shooting Gallery Asia

Mr Tan has been known to be a maverick possessing a unique and effective blend of creativity, fiery passion and foresight. Besides being the President of the Professional Photographers Association (Singapore), Mr Tan also sits on the advisory panel of Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design and the Institute of Technical Education’s Design and Media Academic Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Singapore Workforce Development Agency’s Media & Communications Manpower Skills & Training Council.

He has also served and judged in various Awards including the Creative Circle Awards, The Hall Of Fame Awards, The Crowbars, The Phoenix, The Kodak Gongs, The Asian Television Awards, The Apollo and many more. At the 2005 Creative Circle Awards, he was one of five individuals honoured with a ‘Champions of the Creative Circle Awards’ in recognition of his contributions to the industry.

 

Ms Wang Hui Fen

Ms Wang graduated with BA (Hons) in Graphic and Media Design from the London College of Communication (then known as London College of Printing) in 1996. Hui Fen's work has won the Award for Excellence in Feature Photography in the contest organised by the Society of Publishers in Asia for 3 consecutive years from 2004 to 2006. In 2006, she also won two awards at the Fifth IFRA Asia Media Award – a Gold award for Best in Feature Photography and a Bronze for Best in News Photography.

In the course of her career, she has covered major news events including the 2004 Tsunami in Aceh, Phuket and Penang as well as the SARS crisis in Singapore. She has also worked on comprehensive picture projects concerning abandoned female children in Hainan, the Rice Trail in Thailand and the lives of migrant domestic workers in Singapore.
